World Poetry Salon:
Nikola Madzirov with Becca Stevens and Patricio Ferrari
Experience words and music from around the globe at the World Poetry Salon, a new series presented in partnership with Limelight Poetry, a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting world poetry. Each event features readings by a celebrated poet set to live music by a musician of the same cultural background.
We are thrilled to announce this new program series kicking off as part of the World Literature & Arts Festival 2025 and recurring quarterly. This salon will feature a reading by poet Nikola Madžirov accompanied by musician Becca Stevens. Madžirov will read his poetry in Macedonian, and a chapbook will be available for attendees to follow along in English. Following the reading, Madžirov will be interviewed in English by event host Patricio Ferrari.

Nikola Madzirov
Nikola Madzirov (poet, essayist, translator) was born in 1973 in Strumica, in the family of war refugees from the Balkan Wars. When he was 18, the collapse of Yugoslavia prompted a shift in his sense of identity – as a writer reinventing himself in a country which felt new but was still nourished by deeply rooted historical traditions. His poems are translated into more than forty languages.
For the book Relocated Stone (2007) was given the international Hubert Burda poetry award for the writers born in East Europe and the most prestigious Macedonian poetry award Miladinov Brothers at Struga Poetry Evenings. Other recognitions include Studentski Zbor award for best poetry debut and Xu Zhimo Silver Leaf award for European poetry at King’s College, Cambridge in UK. American jazz composer Oliver Lake; the Pulitzer Prize winner and composer Du Yun; the American composer and singer Becca Stevens and the founder of “Snarky Puppy” — Michael League have composed music based on Madzirov's poems. He was granted the following international fellowships: International Writing Program (IWP) at University of Iowa; Yaddo and MacDowell in US; DAAD in Berlin; Marguerite Yourcenar in France and many others. Nikola Madzirov is one of the coordinators of the international poetry network Lyrikline, based in Berlin. He edited the Macedonian edition of the Anthology of World’s Poetry: XX and XXI Century. He is editor of the literary magazine Stremež and curated and moderated events at Poesiefestival Berlin, Stockholm International Poetry Festival, Struga Poetry Evenings. Nikola Madzirov has translated some of the work of Louise Glück, Yehuda Amichai, Ilya Kaminsky, Li-Young Lee, Slavenka Drakulić, Vasko Popa, Georgi Gospodinov and others. He was member of the jury for the largest international poetry award for a single book, The Griffin International Poetry Prize in 2023. His poetry collection “Remnants of Another Age” was published by “BOA Editions” in US and by “Bloodaxe Books” in UK.
“Nikola Madzirov is one of the finest poets in Europe today! I admire his genius on every page of his poetry book. He is a visionary, a true poet whom all poetry lovers in the world should know. ”
Charles Simic
“Madzirov's poems are like Expressionist paintings: filled with thick, energetic streaks they seem to emerge from the imagination and to return to it right away, like night animals caught in the headlights of a car. “We are the remnants of another age” — Nikola Madzirov succeeds in convincing us. ”
Adam Zagajewski
“Nikola Madzirov's poems seem to spring from elsewhere in time, reflective of a preternaturally wise and attentive sensibility. As we read these poems, they begin to inhabit us, and we are the better for having opened ourselves to them. Madzirov is a rare soul and a true poet.”
Carolyn Forché
“I liked Madzirov's poetry immensely, its candour, its invention, its darkness. It is like discovering a new planet in the solar system of the imagination!”

MUSICIAN
Patricio Ferrari
Patricio Ferrari (polyglot poet, translator, editor) was born in Buenos Aires and left home at sixteen, when he began a lifelong journey across continents and languages. He has since shaped a multilingual poetics that explores belonging, displacement, and the in-between. In 2025, he was awarded the Fence Modern Poets Series Prize for Mud Songs, the first volume of Elsehere, a trilogy charting how each language molds and reveals a different facet of the self—what he calls heterophony, the process of self-othering through an adopted tongue.
